About the Trust
The EWS Educational Trust is a registered charity established in 2009 with funds from the sale of English Welsh & Scottish Railway Holdings Limited. These funds were gifted in trust by the former framework shareholders as a permanent legacy in recognition of the contributions of the people who made the business the success it became.
The purpose of the Trust is to award grants on a discretionary basis to enable candidates who have close family links to the UK rail freight industry to pursue academic excellence, sporting or artistic development at a high level, and to support those individuals facing exceptional challenges.
The Trust is managed by voluntary Trustees who have a wide range of experience in business and the charity world. The current Trustees are:
Keith Heller (Chairman of the Trustees)
Chris Tingle
David Allen
George Shaw
Gerry Skelton
Paul Bates
Clair Mowbray
Edward Wilson
Jak Pickerden
The Grant Committee, which is made up of Trustees, meets to consider applications at least once a year. The deadline for 2024/25 Educational Award applications is 31 August 2024.
